Twilight Tobogganing

I was on the hunt for something fun to do for my son’s 7th Birthday. Which was proving pretty tricky this year with parties pretty much cancelled! When Twilight Tobogganing at The Mendip Activity Centre popped up in my Facebook feed, it looked like the perfect package!

The cost of the tobogganing varied depending on the date and the day of the week. We paid £75 for a maximum group of 6 people. This included 30 minutes of tobogganing, followed by 30 minutes exclusive use of a fire pit complete with marshmallows to toast, hot chocolates, sparklers, candy canes and Santa hats! All in a Covid-19 safe environment.

Obviously being British winter-time, the weather on the evening was wet! But this year has been all about making the best of every opportunity. We shoved the kids into wet weather gear (much to the dislike of the youngest!) and arrived 10 minutes before our allotted tobogganing slot.

The staff were warm and welcoming on arrival. We were shown to our ‘cabin’ for the quick safety briefing. Then it was time to grab our toboggans and head for the hill!

The purpose built toboggan slope had been spilt in half, to allow for two groups of tobogganers (maximum of 6 per group). There was plenty of space for everyone. The slope is only about 30 metres long so that means you get plenty of turns! The boys absolutely loved it and took no encouragement to jump on their toboggans and start whizzing down. There was no fear even from the 4 year old! For the adults too, you couldn’t help but have a smile on your face by the bottom, it was like returning to childhood and was mega-fun.

Half an hour of tobogganing was a perfect amount of time, it was surprisingly tiring walking back up the slope! Even the kids were ready for a break when our time was up. We dropped the toboggans back at the reception and headed up the beautifully lit steps to the lodge.

We were shown to our fire pit and spent a lovely half an hour enjoying hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows, could have easily spent all evening there!

As ‘experiences’ go the Twilight Tobogganing was an excellent package. The tobogganing was a real giggle for everyone and the fire pit afterwards was a really nice way to wrap up the evening. It was the perfect way to celebrate my son’s birthday and the whole evening felt quite magical.

A new tradition has been born!
